Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria commented on this artisanal work with admiration in his work Die Balearen, where he describes the whole process of obra de llatra. It begins with the gathering of the palms in the month of July, which are then spread out and left to dry in the sun so that they turn a whitish colour. Once dry, they are separated into finer strands which are soaked in water and bleach, and sulphur is added to them – to bleach them and make them more supple. Afterwards they are plaited, an activity performed in the main by women, who use them to create baskets, hats, panniers, wood baskets, knapsacks or shoes.
