In the Serra de Tramuntana nature has created beauty spots that are unique in the world, and essential for understanding Mallorca. Landscapes that have become an emblem of the island, like the peninsula of Sa Foradada, the beach of Sa Calobra, the Torrent de Pareis canyon, the dramatic cliffs of Formentor, the singular upwelling of water at Ses Fonts Ufanes in Campanet… Settings that move one with their immensity and beauty, and are different every day because the light, the sky, the land are never the same. Contemplating them gives one an idea of the value of the declaration of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range as World Heritage – now it belongs to everyone, so we must all admire and protect it.

 

Sa Foradada
Sa Foradada is a peninsula located in the municipality of Deià, and its name comes from the impressive hole that runs through it, which is about 18 m in diameter, visible from different parts of the coast. The best place to observe it from is the Son Marroig viewing platform, especially at sunset – an intense, romantic image.
According to one anecdote, when the Archduke Ludwig Salvator purchased the Son Marroig estate, which included the peninsula of Sa Foradada, someone told him he had paid an extortionate price for it. But he replied that what he had been charged was not even enough to pay for the hole in Sa Foradada. The nobleman had the path that connects the two enclaves built, along with a small pier for mooring his magnificent sailing boat, the Nixe.

Sa Calobra and Torrent de Pareis
Sa Calobra is one of the most visited beaches on Mallorca, because of its spectacular scenery. It is located in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana, and can be accessed by a narrow road on what is an impressive journey – 14 kilometres of tarmac that run down to the sea with multiple bends, twelve of which are 80º and one – called the Nus de sa Corbata, or knot of the tie, a 360º curve.

A walk of about 300 m along the cliffs leads to the mouth of the Torrente de Pareis ravine, which forms a small, very well-preserved, pebbly beach. An impressive space, surrounded by high walls of rock rising up to 200 m high in some places. This is the setting for the Torrente de Pareis Choral Concert every year at the beginning of July.

Cala Tuent
A heavenly beach situated between Punta de sa Corda and Morro des Forat, in the shadow of the Puig Major (1,445 m), the highest peak on the Balearics. The sand on the seashore turns into pebbles and gravels further back. Cala Tuent marks the end of Sa Costera, one of the most beautiful excursions on can take in Mallorca, which leaves from Mirador de ses Barques, in the Port of Sóller.

Formentor cliffs
One of the most impressive landscapes in the north of Mallorca. This is a narrow headland with a road that runs along it up to the Formentor lighthouse. Before reaching the beach, you pass by two excellent observation points: Sa Creueta, with the islet of Colomer in the background, and Talaia d’Albercuix, a defence tower located nearly 400 m above sea level, which used to form part of the island’s defence system against attacks by corsairs.

Ses Fonts Ufanes
Declared a Natural Monument, Ses Fonts Ufanes constitutes a unique hydrogeological phenomenon in the Balearic Islands. It is an intermittent upwelling of water which is manifested violently and spontaneously after intense, continuous rainfall. It is located in the Gabellí Petit public estate in Campanet.
